Aleutian Pribilof Islands Energy Summit

In 2009, several Aleutian entities formed an alliance in an effort to unify, and give momentum to, critical energy and infrastructure issues facing their communities.  The “A Team,” as members refer to themselves, consists of several key regional entities; among them are The Aleut Corporation, The Aleut Foundation, Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association, East Aleutian Tribes, the Aleutian Housing Authority, and APICDA.

The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Energy Summit resulted from the collaborative efforts of the A Team in response to the region’s urgent need to restructure its dependency on fossil fuels.  Transport of fuel to many of the communities is unreliable, due to location and weather, causing residents to pay two to three times that of other areas in the state.
On April 22 & 23, 2010 representatives of the region’s communities and organizations met to discuss the current difficulties, options, and goals of converting from fossil fuels to sustainable energy alternatives.  A goal was set to reduce fossil fuel consumption in the Aleutian and Pribilof communities by 85 percent.  A regional plan to implement the reduction will be in position by spring 2011.
