Akutan

Akutan is located on Akutan Island in the eastern Aleutians. Akutan is a small community and consists of 14 miles of land mass. It is located 35 miles east of Unalaska and 766 air miles southwest of Anchorage.

Akutan has an active Volcano only 8 miles from town which is one on the most active volcanoes in Alaska. Akutan residents frequently experience seismic activity on the island.

Akutan village is home to 77 residents as of 2005. Of these residents, 24 are students or retired persons, leaving 53 adults in the workforce. Current community statistics show 18 persons who are employed full time, 18 unemployed persons and 17 persons with part time employment.

Akutan is a small boardwalk village, with no paved roads. Most people walk or ride a four wheeler to get around town. There is a museum in the community with artifacts from the community which is attached to the library.

The village has a housing shortage and many families live together due to the lack of available housing on the island. Most of Akutan’s residents rely on the fishing industry as a means to support their families. Median gross income is estimated to be under $19,000 per person per year.

Akutan residents experience a very high cost of living due to their remote location. A round trip plane ticket from Anchorage to Akutan costs $1,248 through Peninsula Airways, the only air carrier that flies into the community. There is no airstrip in Akutan, but there is a seaplane base for the Pen Air Grumman Goose planes. The only other way to access the island is by boat.
