Higher Education Scholarship Program
The purpose of the Higher Education Scholarship Program is to provide scholarship awards to successful applicants who are currently accepted to or enrolled at a nationally or regionally accredited college or university. It is the intention of APICDA to award scholarships, to support the educational endeavors of any residents of the communities in the APICDA region who wish to pursue a formal education. It is APICDA's belief that through education (in any field of study) these communities will be able to build stronger infrastructures to promote and achieve the economic development necessary to relieve the conditions of poverty, dependency, chronic unemployment and underemployment in the communities. APICDA intends to use the funds made available through the Community Development Quota program as a genesis for this economic growth and development, and education of the residents of the APICDA region is a key component of this plan.
In 2007 - this program awarded over $191,915 in scholarships to 48 students.
In 2008 - this program awarded $228,555 in scholarhsips to 61 students.
In 2009 - this program awarded $221,837 in scholarships to 65 students.
How to Qualify:
Applicants must meet one of two residency requirements:
1. Historical relationship to one of the following communities Atka, Akutan, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George, or Unalaska.
2. At least five years current residency in one of the seven communities listed above.
Applicants Must:
1. Be formally accepted at a college or university
2. Meet one of the two residency requirements above
3. Demonstrate financial need
4. Submit a complete application packet by the published deadline below
Fund Limits:
APICDA’s scholarships are subject to the following funding limits:
A. Campus students. Applicants enrolled in at least 80 percent live classes and residing away from their home communities on or adjacent to the campus of the college or university they attend are eligible for up to $5,000 in scholarship funds from APICDA.
B. Distance education students. Applicants enrolled in more than 20 percent online classes; and do not leave their home communities to attend a college or university are eligible for up to $2,500 in scholarship funds from APICDA.

July 1st for the fall and spring semesters (school year) award.

2010 Spring Higher Education Scholarship Recipients
Money for Good Grades:
Recipients of the Higher Education Scholarship may qualify for the GPA scholarship. This scholarship program was developed to awards students who receive outstanding GPA's for the term they are funded.
1. GPA scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester and not more than $1,000 per school year.
2. Students do not not need to apply for the GPA scholarship.
3. Qualified recipients must earn a 3.5 GPA or higher, be in good standing in the Higher Education Scholarship program, and have received funding from APICDA during the previous term. GPA Scholarships are not awarded based on cumulative GPA but on the GPA for the term funded by APICDA.
In 2009 - this program awarded $13,500 to twenty students.
Supplemental Education Scholarship Program
The purpose of supplemental grants is to provide training and supplemental education scholarship assistance to APICDA residents. APICDA intends to use this program to support the educational endeavors of any resident of the communities in the APICDA region who wishes to pursue educational courses, certifiable training or vocational training. APICDA believes that vocational training or supplemental education (in any field of training) will assist our communities in building stronger infrastructures to promote and achieve the economic development necessary to relieve the conditions of poverty, dependency, chronic unemployment and underemployment in our region. APICDA intends to use the funds made available through the Community Development Quota program as a genesis for this economic growth and development. Vocational training and supplemental education of the residents of the APICDA region is a key component of this plan.
In 2007 - this program awarded over $40,907 to 24 residents.
In 2008 - this program awarded $26,905 to 16 residents.
In 2009 - this program awarded $44,122 to 12 residents.
How to Qualify:
1. Applicants must: reside in the APICDA region
2. Be accepted to an accredited training program
3. Maintain a 2.0 GPA or passing grade.
4. Applications must be turned in 10 business days prior to payment due date.
5. Scholarships are awarded any amount up to $3,000 per calendar year, based on applicant financial need.
